Face Paint For Beginners

Designs may include butterflies

Face painting is one way to generate funds for charity at school fairs or amuse the children at birthday parties.

The skills to be a competent face painter are easily learned with practice and the materials required are inexpensive. The paints may be in flat colors or have added glitter or gloss for special effects as long as they comply with American or European safety regulations in black, blue, green, flesh pink, white, red, pink and yellow. Designs may include butterflies, tigers, cats and dogs or super heroes.

Children's faces may take up to thirty minutes to paint at first but with practice the painting time may be reduced to about fifteen minutes.

Instructions

Tiger, Tiger Face Design

1. Moisten a sponge lightly with water and mix some white paint in the plastic palette with a touch of red to produce a pale orange base color. Sponge the color over the face evenly, taking care not to run the paint into the hairline.

Wait for one or two minutes while the base dries slightly.

2. Dip a 5mm brush into the white paint and apply long strokes to the face starting at the hairline.

Taper the strokes to a point to simulate the stripes on a tiger's face, finishing at the eyebrows over the forehead and near the nose.

Add more stripes running from the chin upward, this time making the stripes narrower.

3. Using black paint and a 3mm brush, edge the white stripes in black.

Cover the eyebrows with black paint, making a "peak" over the highest part of the arch. Blacken the underside of the nose and run a black line around the eyes.

Using a fine point brush, paint "whiskers" running from the upper lip over the cheeks.

4. To make corrections, remove mistakes with baby wipes.

To remove the face paint, wash with warm water and soap or use baby wipes.
