About Editorials

One of the most controversial and interesting sections of your local newspaper may be the editorial section. This opinion page allows readers the chance to comment on local events, laws or recent news. Newspaper columnists have the option to express their opinions and instigate thought-provoking commentary for readers to enjoy. Editorials are one way Americans can express their freedom of expression.

Identification

An editorial from the community may simply come in the form of a letter to the editor. This self-expression presents the community member's option in a public format. Others are allowed to read, digest and comment on their thoughts. Articles, columns or even polls may be found on an editorial page. The common theme among them is opinion.

Features

Editorials feature expressive voice. Often an editorial will praise an action, subject or person in a public way. Congratulatory letters to the editor are common. However, the most common editorial is meant to take a side, create an argument, or cause you to think about your stance on a local or national issue. Since opinion and unbiased reporting fills the rest of the newspaper, the editorial page is the place to look for local feedback on news stories that have been presented in a neutral light.

Submitting

Submitting an editorial to your newspaper is easy. Read the current issue and look for a box asking for your comments. A mailing address or email should direct you to where you can send your comments. Be aware that your comments may be edited for clarity and space; however, the context shouldn't be altered. Your editorial may appear in their print edition as well as online. Don't be surprised if you receive feedback from people who disagree with you. An editorial opens the door for discussion.

Types

Editorials are not exclusive to newsprint. They may also be found in magazines, on websites, in trade journals or company newsletters. The open forum of an editorial section is appreciated by the audience of many publications, and it increases readership and subscriptions.

Effects

Editorials allow the average person an opportunity express her freedom of expression and speech. Comments and opinions on local newsmakers are encouraged in the newspaper. This two-way communication between the citizens and the issues makes the newspaper a local forum for the entire community.
