Clown Makeup Tips

Beautiful clown

Clowns can be the funniest things you'll ever see. They do balloon tricks, smash pies into their faces, and display other nonsensical behaviors. Submerge yourself into the realm of clown-hood and paint your face like a clown's! You have to possess a wild imagination to produce the perfect look to wow the kids. Some make-up artists either make the make-up too scary or too subtle. But with a little creativity it is possible to create interesting, yet happy patterns on the face of a clown.

Punk Clowns

Punk clowns exude a fun rocker vibe. To create a punk rocker effect, sponge your entire face and neck with white powder. Use darker colors for your lips. Use black mascara and eyeliner to darken your eyes as the white powder will often obliterate them. Use a cosmetic pencil to darken your eyebrows. A clown's outfit is never complete without the right hair. Choose a long, colorful and spiky wig to top it off.

Bozo Style

We all love that larger than life Bozo the Clown. If you want his look, you will need the right tools first. You will need a black cosmetic pencil, white powder, a Bozo wig and face paint. Powder your face and neck white. Outline the lower portion of your face with the cosmetic pencil. Paint the inside of that area, including your lips, red. Use black face paint for those two-curved lines on top of Bozo's forehead. Put on the wig and a red clown nose.

Water/Oil Based

If you are performing in an area with high temperature, it is better to use oil-based makeup rather than water-based makeup. This is because you will sweat in hot areas, causing the water-based makeup to run and look unpleasant. You can use water-based makeup in cooler areas because you won't be sweating very much. It is also a good idea to use water-based makeup indoors or on television performances where the temperature is cooler.
