Apply Magnetic Chalkboard Paint

Magnetic chalkboard paint can be placed on a wall or on a seperate board like this one.

Magnetic chalkboard paint can be used to turn an ordinary wall or sheet of wood into a usable chalkboard that can also serve as a magnet board. This can be an affordable way to add to a home schooling classroom, church classes, or any other learning environment. Some also use magnetic paint on walls without the chalkboard paint covering and attach magnetic backing to pictures and awards to hang them without nails.

Instructions

1. Inspect the surface you wish to paint on to make sure that it is level and free of holes. If the surface is textured, you may need to sand down the surface to make it flat. Fill any holes in the surface.

2. Tape around the area you are going to paint. This will make sure that the edges of your new chalkboard are clean.

3. Apply primer to the surface you are going to paint. Try to use smooth movements to apply the primer and try to avoid any dripping and clumping. The goal is a smooth and even coat of primer. Allow the primer to dry.

4. Stir the magnetic paint thoroughly before you begin. The magnetic parts of the paint are heavier and may separate toward the bottom of the paint can. Throughout the painting, mix the paint periodically so that the paint is uniformly magnetic.

5. Apply the magnetic paint to the primed area, using a paint roller. Do this in the same manner as you applied the primer. Once you have covered the area with the first coat, allow the paint to cure according to the manufacturer's instructions. This usually takes around 30 minutes.

6. Continue applying more coats of paint in the same manner, allowing the paint to cure between coats. You want at least three coats, as each coat increases the magnetism of the board.

7. Apply the chalkboard paint over the magnetic paint after the last coat has cured. You will want to apply two coats, allowing the first coat to cure before applying the second coat.

8. Cover the area in chalk once the final coat has cured and wipe clean with a cloth.
