Use unexpected fabrics, textures and unconventional materials for curtains that you can guarantee no one else on the block has.
Unexpected Textures
Check your local sewing store's fabric selection. You'll find all kinds of fabrics that aren't traditionally used for curtains, but would make an exciting statement in your bedroom. Consider using slick and shiny patent pleather, shaggy faux fur or metallic lam . Whether you choose a soft color, a bright color or a patterned fabric, these unusual, exaggerated textures kick up the crazy factor of your curtains.
Unexpected Materials
There's no rule that curtains must be made of fabric purchased at a sewing store. Comb your closets, your garage or the thrift shop for unusual items that could be hung as curtains. As long as you can figure out a way to hang it over your window, it can be considered a curtain. For example, you could use a large flag as a curtain, or a grass hula skirt. Another trompe l'oeil option is to paint what looks like a curtain onto the wall around the window, and use a simple blind or mini blinds to actually cover the window.

There are many fun and unusual shower curtains on the market, and you can just as easily hang one over your bedroom window as across your shower. Look online or at specialty bed and bath stores and you'll find all kinds of unusual designs, from clear plastic curtains with pockets to fabric curtains with oversized ruffles or bright, unexpected graphics.
Help With Hanging
Kick the craziness of your curtains up a notch with unexpected curtain rods. Look through your home, garage and the hardware store for everyday items that could be used as rods. For example, you could try a thin tree branch, copper or aluminum tubing, hockey sticks or fishing rods. If your fabric is not heavy, consider using wire or rope and clothespins. Curtains can also be hung on pegs, although in this manner they are fixed in place and do not open or close. In place of plain wooden pegs, used antique glass doorknobs, hat hooks or cabinet knobs.

Now that you've got lots of great ideas for some crazy, one-of-a-kind curtains, it's time to make them happen. Even if you are not handy with a sewing machine, you can easily make these looks happen, thanks to clip rings. Clip rings are rings that slide onto curtain rods. Each ring has a small but strong clip attached to it, and you simply clip your curtain onto the rings. You turn just about any type of fabric, or even paper, into curtains by hanging it over your window with clip rings.
