Elves and pointy ears go together like zebras and stripes, so when you're celebrating the holiday season this year, be sure to make yourself a pair that reflects your interests and personality. Using craft items to build a Santa's helper costume can be a great way to celebrate the holiday for elves of any age.
Plastic Canvas Ears
Plastic canvas can be used to create elf ears that won't flop around. Cut out two pointy ear shapes from the plastic canvas material that are big enough to cover your own ears. Using flesh-colored yarn or thread, fill in the stitch holes of the plastic canvas with a basic straight stitch; alternately, you can stitch a pattern if you want to create a fancy pair. Attach your new elf ears to a plastic headband with glue, and wear it in front of your ears. Alternately, you could make a ribbon headband that circles the top of your head, from over your forehead to the back of your neck, and attach the ears to it for easy wearability.
Felt Elf Ears on a Hat
If you have a fun elf-themed hat, then adding some ears to it is simple. First, cut out large pointy ears from flesh-colored felt that are bigger than your own. Draw any details onto the ears with a permanent marker as desired. Pull the hat right down to, or over, the tops of your ears and make a mark where your elf ears should be attached. Glue your felt elf ears onto the hat where you've marked with craft or fabric glue.
Craft Foam Elf Ears
Flesh-colored craft foam can be used to make comfortable elf ears that fit over your real ones. Hold a piece of tissue paper up to your ear and make a rubbing of your ear using crayons. This will give you an idea of the size and shape of the elf ears that you will need. Cut the ear shape out of the tissue paper, being sure to design it in a C shape around the ear drum hole; trace it onto the foam, making it wider around the edges for seam allowance and adding a point at the top. Cut four ear shapes from the craft foam (two for each ear). Use hot glue to glue the outside and top edges of two ear pieces together, leaving the bottom and inside open. You should now have an ear "envelope" that will fit over the top of your own ear.
