Eucalyptus House Plants

Eucalyptus leaves are known for their distinct floral fragrance.

Eucalyptus trees and plants are versatile flora with a wide range of health and environmental benefits; eucalyptus oil is valued as a natural insecticide and the speedy growth rate makes eucalyptus a valuable and replenishable fuel source. Though towering eucalyptus trees dominate the Australian landscape, several smaller varieties of the flowering tree are suitable for use as decorative indoor plants.

Corymbia Citriodora

The Corymbia citriodora is more commonly referred to as the lemon eucalyptus, and when left to grow naturally it can reach staggering heights of 100 feet or more. The fresh citrus scent of the lemon eucalyptus also makes it a desirable houseplant. Controlling the growth of the lemon eucalyptus is relatively simply and requires little more than restricted container growth and regular pruning to keep back new foliage. Keep your lemon eucalyptus in a sunny area; lemon eucalyptus also tolerate high humidity, so they are ideal for a well-lit master bathroom as a source of both decorative foliage and natural aromatherapy.

Eucalyptus Pulverulenta

If you've ever included dry or fresh eucalyptus into a floral arrangement or bouquet, you've likely encountered the cultivar Eucalyptus pulverulenta, more commonly called Baby Blue. Baby Blue eucalyptus is a highly fragrant, round leaf variety of eucalyptus that is hardy and easy to grow. Outdoor Baby Blue eucalyptus shrubs and trees grow to 80 feet, but potted and container varieties are easy to restrict to a size suitable for houseplants. Opt for an 8- to 9-inch pot to start and transplant to a larger pot if necessary after the first several months. Baby Blue eucalyptus is so named for its powdery, silver-gray foliage that are dotted with small sprigs of white flowers during its fall blooming season. Like other varieties of eucalyptus, Baby Blue prefers full sunlight but will tolerate partial sun as well as drier soil conditions.

Eucalyptus Neglecta

The eucalyptus neglecta, or Omeo gum, is one of the smaller varieties of eucalyptus trees, reaching heights of up to 20 feet when left to grow outdoors. Indoors, the Omeo gum is a highly ornamental houseplant with few maintenance requirements once the young plant has been established and its growth has been adequately restricted. The glossy leaves of the plant are distinctly waxy and incredibly fragrant for additional indoor value. White flowers dot the smooth branches during the spring and fall blooming season. True to its name, the eucalyptus neglecta tolerates partial shade and sporadic watering, so it's an ideal starter plant for amateur or beginner gardeners.
