Decorate A Plain Fleece Scarf

Decorations dress up a plain scarf.

A plain fleece scarf keeps your neck warm but lacks personality for those cold winter days. Embellishments allow you to customize the fleece scarf to make it stand out and reflect your personal fashion style. Unlike other fabrics, fleece doesn't fray along the edges so you are able to cut it. Adding other materials as embellishments gives you additional decorating options. The decorative ideas work whether you purchase a scarf or cut your own from a piece of fleece.

Instructions

1. Cut the ends of the fleece scarf into a different shape than the traditional straight line. Cut the ends to look rounded, scalloped or jagged. For a child's fleece scarf, cut one end to look like an animal's face and the other end to look like its tail. For example, you might cut one end to look like an alligator's head and the other end to look like it's long, pointed tail. Draw a pattern of the edge shape you want on a piece of paper. Pin the paper to the scarf at the end and cut around it using sharp scissors. Fleece won't fray so you don't need to hem the edges.

2. Cut a fringed edge on each end of the scarf if it doesn't already have fringes. Mark each cut based on how thick you want the fringe pieces. Cut the same depth for each slit to create an even fringe.

3. Sew a length of decorative trim or edging along each end of the scarf instead of cutting fringe. Cut the edging to the correct length to cover the edge of the scarf. Pin the edging in place using straight pins. Thread the needle and tie a knot at the end of the string. Stitch from one end of the edging to the other, making sure the needle and thread go completely through the edging and scarf. Knot the thread on the back side of the scarf when you reach the opposite end of the edging.

4. Cut out designs from additional pieces of fleece, either in the same color or different colors depending on how you want the design to look. Draw a pattern on paper and pin it to the fleece you are cutting if desired. Another option is to cut the designs freehand without a pattern. Pin the fleece cutouts in place and stitch them onto the scarf. The fleece cutouts will add some weight to the scarf depending on how many you place on the scarf.

5. Sew beads onto the scarf to create a raised design. Lay the beads out on the scarf first to create the design. Sew the beads in place by guiding the needle and thread through the holes in the beads and into the scarf.
