Create Digital Scrapbooking Templates

You can create digital scrapbooking templates on your own.

Using a graphics editor with layer-preservation capabilities will enable you to create digital scrapbooking templates that can be opened, edited and re-saved time and time again. Basic editing programs that merge all layers before enabling you to save your file, on the other hand, are not effective in creating templates for future use. Adobe Photoshop is the industry standard in terms of graphics design, but free programs like Gimp also can perform the necessary functions for creating your own files.

Instructions

1. Open a graphics editing program. If you do not already have an advanced editor on your computer, download a free one and follow the accompanying installation instructions (see Resources). Restart your computer, if necessary, to make the addition take effect.

2. Create a new file, selecting the dimensions and properties of your choice. Common scrapbooking template sizes are 8.5-by-11 inches or 12-by-12. For quality printing results, select X and Y resolutions of 300 pixels per inch.

3. Insert scrapbooking papers, borders and graphics as desired. Open the "Layers" window to order the embellishments from front-to-back, and use toolbar features to arrange and edit the basic elements according to your preferences.

4. Save your template using a workable file extension, preserving your layers and allowing for future edits. In Gimp, for example, saving a file using an ".xcf" extension will preserve the layers; simply saving it with a traditional picture extension such as ".jpg" or ".png" will flatten the image, making future edits between layers impossible.
