Apply Gesso Over Wood

For centuries, painters have used gesso as a base for their masterpieces. This material is similar to a primer. It stiffens canvas while also providing a uniform color for paints. Gesso also stops paint from absorbing into a wood surface, allowing the painting to last longer in the process. If you have a wood surface and you want to create your own masterpiece, you should put down a layer of gesso first to ensure it lasts a long time.

Instructions

1. Cover your work surface with newspaper to protect it from damage. Put the wood on top of the newspaper.

2. Open the can of gesso, and using the putty knife apply a thin coat. Run the short knap roller over the surface to even out the base. Allow it to dry overnight.

3. Sand the gesso slightly with the sanding mesh to even up the surface again. Apply a second coat of gesso with the putty knife, then smooth it out with the short knap roller. Allow it to dry for 3 to 7 days, waiting longer in cool and damp regions.
