Canada offers public and private grants to support performers and composers.
Canada supports its musicians via public and private grants that can allow the artist to go on tour, record or promote a CD or music video, or compose new works while free from pressing monetary obligations. These grants support individual musicians, entrepreneurs in the music business, and organizations that help musicians.
Canada Arts Council
The Canada Arts Council offers grants to professional musicians for different durations in a variety of job titles that include instrumentalists, singers, composers, arrangers, singers/songwriters, performers, conductors, and opera stage directors. Long-term (seven to 12 months) and short-term grants (up to 6 months) are available. A candidate may apply only for one type of grant in genres that include classical, jazz, world, songwriting, Aboriginal, experimental, electroacoustic, improvised, traditional, functional, folk and/or electronic. It is up to the musicians to define their genre. Applicants should be professional artists with specialized training their field, not just in the form of a university degree; be recognized by peers as a professional be committed to devoting more time to their field, and with a history of public presentation. Applicants can be at any level of their careers. Applications for long-term grants up to $24,000 are due by March 1 each year; applications for short-term grants up to $12,000 are due November 1 and March 1.

FACTOR: Domestic and International Tour Support
The Foundation Assisting Canadian Talent on Recordings (FACTOR) supports musicians in multiple ways. They have grant options for recording music, going on tour domestically or abroad, and marketing and selling a recorded album. Funding can be up to 75% of the eligible budget plus an administration flat fee not to exceed $15,000. The audio recording that the tour will support must have sold a minimum of 2,000 copies. Deadlines are May 31, July 29, September 30, November 30 and January 31. The fund is provided by Canada's Private Radio Broadcasters and the Department of Canadian Heritage's Canada Music Fund's New Musical Works.

SOCAN Foundation
Canada Music Fund encourages and enhances the country's access to diverse music, supports musicians and entrepreneurs in the music industry, as well as music education. The Creators' Assistance Component of the Canada Music Fund supports Canadian lyricists, composers and songwriters to form their craft and business knowledge. They provide producers and artists access to high-quality Canadian compositions. The fund is supported by the Socan Foundation. The grant is awarded to nonprofit organizations and associations representing musical creators.

New Musical Works
The Canada Music Fund also supports a New Musical Works Component that provides Canadian musical creators and entrepreneurs with the opportunity to create and market a Canadian recording. The grant also supports craft development and education. Eligible applicants are Canadian musicians, nonprofit organizations, associations or corporations, including record labels, music publishers, and artist management personnel. Applicants must apply for MEC (Music Entrepreneur Component) funding first. If they qualify for MEC funding they are ineligible to apply for The New Musical Works Component, but can apply for the Music Entrepreneur Component.
