Begin To Oil Paint

Oil paints come in tubes.

Oil paint is a mixture of pigment and oil. It possesses a thick texture, and it dries very slowly. The oil paints can be mixed to make different colors. You can do this by squeezing the paints on to a palette, and then using the palette knife to put the colors together that you desire to blend. In order to begin to oil paint, take an art class, purchase the supplies that you need, apply the gesso to the canvas, examine the colors and experiment with mixing them, practice the brush strokes on the canvas and apply the varnish.

Instructions

1. Take an art class. In order to begin to oil paint, you should learn the fundamentals of painting and have some hands-on experience. Taking an art class will help you to develop good technique. You can take an art class at a community college.

2. Purchase the supplies that you need. You can either purchase the oil-painting supplies online or at the art store. If you go to the art store, you can tell the clerk that you are learning oil paint and need some basic supplies. The clerk will help you to choose the supplies that best suit your needs.

3. Apply gesso to the canvas to protect the canvas and provide a smooth surface to paint on.

4. Mix different colors of paint on your palette with your palette knife. See how the colors look alone and how they look mixed together. This will help you to create the colors that you need for your painting.

5. Practice the brush strokes. As you begin to oil paint, you can try different brush strokes in order to develop different textures in your painting.

6. Apply varnish to the painting after the painting has dried for a few months. The varnish will help the colors on the painting to remain vibrant and not crack. As you paint on the varnish, use uniform brush strokes.
