Clean Brass Wall Lights

Real brass light fixtures can be difficult to clean. Brass naturally tarnishes, and it takes a strong solvent such as a chemical stripper to remove it. To properly clean a brass light, you will need to remove it from the wall to apply the solvent. After cleaning, the application of a protective wax will keep the brass from tarnishing further.

Instructions

1. With a screwdriver, remove the screws securing the light fixture to the wall. Remove any light shades and light bulbs, and set them aside.

2. Wipe the fixture with a damp cloth to remove any dust.

3. Put on protective gloves. Dampen a soft sponge with chemical stripper, and wipe the fixture while holding it over a plastic bucket. The stripper will remove any tarnish from the surface of the brass. You can also fill the bucket with stripper, and soak the fixture in the liquid according to the package directions.

4. If there are tarnish spots that won't come off with a sponging, gently rub the surface of the brass with a piece of steel wool.

5. Rinse the fixture in clear running water. Dry it with a clean cloth.

6. Dip a clean cloth into metal polish. Using gentle, circular motions, buff the polish into the surface of the brass fixture. The polish will restore the shine to the piece and protect it.

7. Replace the light bulbs and lamp shades to the fixture, and return it to the wall. Insert the screws into their original holes, and secure them with a screwdriver.
