Clean Tarnish From A Brass Boat

Remove ugly tarnish from the brass parts of your boat.

At their best, the brass adornments on your boat shimmer in the sun and give off a warm, radiant glow. At its worst, brass takes on a brown, dingy cast that leaves no shine nor shimmer. Without a coat of lacquer, moist air can quickly erode the brass surfaces on your boat. Though a number of commercial brass cleaners are available, you can perform the same job using simple household supplies.

Instructions

1. Make a mixture of warm water and several drops of dish soap. Clean the brass surfaces thoroughly with this solution and a hand towel. Wipe the area dry.

2. Fill a plastic spray bottle halfway with ammonia. Top off the rest of the bottle with water. Spray the solution onto the brass and allow it to sit undisturbed for five to 10 minutes. Wipe off with a hand towel.

3. Saturate a fresh towel with vinegar. Sprinkle table salt over the vinegar. Scrub away any remaining tarnish with the saturated towel, applying firm pressure and using a circular motion. Apply more vinegar and salt as needed.

4. Rinse the area with fresh water. Wipe the brass completely dry.
