Create Your Own Wall Graphics

Painting graphics on your walls can make them look better.

One problem with walls painted with a solid color is that they can tend to look plain or boring. Adding wall graphics to the wall can break up the monotony of an otherwise plain wall. There are several ways to do this, including hanging wall graphics that are movable because they hang by static cling, and gluing strips of wallpaper near the top of the wall. Another option is to paint graphics onto the wall with a stencil.

Instructions

1. Wash the walls with a solution consisting of three parts water to one part bleach.

2. Measure and mark the bottom edge of the border at several points along the wall. Connect the marks by lightly drawing a pencil line connecting them, using a straightedge as a guide. Mark the top edge of the border using the same process, but work down from the ceiling instead of up from the floor.

3. Place painter's tape on the walls on the outer edges of the pencil lines.

4. Apply stencil adhesive to the back of the wall stencil and allow to to become sticky.

5. Place the stencil on the wall between the strips of painter's tape. Check the stencil with a level to ensure that you placed it on the wall straight.

6. Pour a small amount of each paint color that is being used in the stencil onto a plastic plate. Keep the different colors separate from each other.

7. Dab a stencil brush into the first paint color, adding just enough paint to cover the tips of the bristles. If you get too much paint on the brush, wipe it off on a paper towel.

8. Paint the graphics onto the wall by using short, quick strokes to add paint over the holes in the stencil. After you finish with the first color, paint the next part of the graphic with the next color. If you're using the same brush, clean it thoroughly before moving onto the next color. Allow the paint to dry.

9. Move the stencil onto the next section of the wall, keeping it perfectly aligned with the first section. Paint the stencil in the next section and allow it to dry. Continue painting the different sections until the walls are complete.

10. Remove the painter's tape from the walls.
