Farm Wall Paint Techniques

Farm scenes include sky, grass and tree techniques when painting.

Painting a wall mural is a great way to add interest and color to a room. Many parents paint their children's bedrooms or nurseries. One theme option in children's rooms is the farm theme. Farm wall murals add many elements together to create a beautiful scene. There are a few painting techniques to master when it comes to painting a farm wall or scene. Following some simple steps will ensure that learning the different techniques is easy.

Instructions

1. Use blue and white paint to master the sky technique. Paint the entire wall a sky blue color. Mix three parts white paint with one part water. This will create a thinner paint to work with when adding clouds. Apply the paint to a rag by dipping the rag into a paint tray. Stamp the white onto the blue wall in a swirling motion. Dab the paint often, blending it into the blue background. Continue to add billowy clouds to the wall until the desired effect is achieved.

2. Apply paint in shades of greens, browns and yellows to complete the technique of painting grass. Paint the entire area in a shade of green as a base coat. Add thin strokes of grass using a narrow-tipped paintbrush. For smaller areas, use a foliage brush to paint small bunches of grass. Use a liner brush to add definition to the blades by painting highlights and shadows.

3. Paint the trees using the dry brush technique. Paint the tree trunks and branches using a medium brown paint. Use both dark and light brown paints and a liner brush to add the tree bark. Add foliage using a large dry brush. Apply a small amount of paint to the bristles and apply the paint in a stamping motion. This gives the illusion of many leaves. Continue to apply different shades of green to the dry brush to create shadows and highlights as well as add different tones to the trees.

4. Use tones of brown to master the wood grain technique. Wood grain is present in fences and on barns, so it needs to be learned when painting a farm mural. Apply a coat of brown paint to the surface. Use a liner brush to add fine lines of different tones of brown to create the grain look. Add a few knots in the wood by painting lines in a soft diamond shape. This adds a realistic look to the wood.

5. Learn draw and paint farm animals. Farm animals are an important part of any farm wall painting. Gather some pictures and use them as reference when drawing the animals. Draw the animals on the surface before attempting to paint them. This will ensure that all the proportions are correct before applying permanent paint to the wall. Base-coat all the animals with the appropriate colors. Add white to the paint to create highlights, add black to create shadows. Paint all the details using a very fine-tipped paintbrush.
