Create Patterns With Encaustics

Encaustic art is great to use with patterns as well as your standard painting styles. Creating patterns for use with encaustic painting is as simple as creating a collage. You can create elaborate layered works of art using encaustic wax painting.

Instructions

1. Decide on a design. The first step in any art project is to decide what you are going to create. For instance, if you decide to create a building, then sketch your plan, or find a picture that you can work from.

2. Break the full design into areas of color. For instance with a building you would want to cut out shapes for each level of the building, overlapping buildings, and the sidewalk and shrubs out front.

3. Cut out each individual shape that you identified in Step 2. Add an additional 1/8-inch overlap to each side of the image that lines up next to another shape.

4. Layout each cut pattern shape in its correct position with at least 1 inch of space around each piece. This will help you envision the ultimate outcome of your encaustic wax painting while you are coloring the individual pieces.

5. Pick up the first piece and apply the encaustic wax using your iron and stylus. Once you have colored it to your satisfaction, set it back in its position in your pattern layout.

6. Color all of the pieces for your pattern. Apply texture and color to each piece. To create matching colors in pieces on opposite sides of the painting, color them in succession.

7. Affix each colored pattern piece onto the background board of your art. This background board may be plain, or it may be decorated with any form of art including encaustic wax painting.
