Decorating Ideas Using Peacock Colors

Use the bright colors of the peacock in your finished design.

Decorating with peacocks has come a long way since the 1960s when the garish colors of the birds' tail feathers were used in all areas of a home. Modern day decorating uses the bright green, blue and gold colors to provide a splash of color in an otherwise dull and boring room. Instead of letting the colors overwhelm the rest of the room, modern day decorating uses just the colors of the peacock to add more interest and contrast to the room, as well as add an unexpected pop of color.

Living Room

Decorating with peacock colors in the living room involves using minimal decorations and using the colors as an accessory. Start with neutral-colored furniture in shades of white, tan or beige. Lay a brightly colored rug on the ground in a shade of blue, green or teal, and even use one of the peacock rugs, which uses the image of the peacock on the run. Add small accessories around the room to increase the color quotient, including blue, green and gold throw pillows on the couch. Finish off with a vase filled with peacock feathers in one corner of the room or as the centerpiece of your coffee table.

Bedroom

Keep your bedroom neutral, and use the peacock colors to add brightness and a splash of color to the room. Use plain white or lightly colored wood furniture, and arrange vases filled with peacock feathers on either side of the bed. Look for accessories in the same shades of blue, green, gold and black to decorate the rest of the room, including bed linens, pillows, wall hangings and paintings. Add a sketch of peacocks above the bed, or a painting of the birds, to show visitors the look you are trying to achieve in the room.

Dining Room

Take inspiration from the peacock-decorated Christmas table built by Better Homes and Gardens, and make your own peacock decorated dining room. Make the dining room table the focal point by covering the table with a bright blue tablecloth. Add gold and white table settings or black and green for a more neutral look. Fill a large vase with Christmas tree bulbs in blue and green, and arrange peacock feathers inside. To make the peacock feathers the central part of the table, use sand in the vase rather than the ornaments, to let the colors shine through.
